When we believe in Jesus Christ, several spiritual realities take place. Scripture describes this not merely as intellectual agreement but trust, repentance, and receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour. The Good News teaches that God acts powerfully in the life of the believer.
Here are the main things Scripture says happen.
1. Our Sins Are Forgiven
Believing in Jesus brings forgiveness of sins because of His death on the cross.
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ Acts 10:43.
Jesus’ sacrifice removes the guilt and penalty of sin.
2. We Are Made Right with God (Declared Righteous)
God declares us righteous, not because of their own efforts (works) but because of Christ.
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Romans 5:1.
This means we are accepted by God.
3. We Receive New Life (Born Again)
When we believe in Jesus, we experience spiritual rebirth. Jesus told a man named Nicodemus that a person must be “born again” to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:1-21).
This means:
- A new spiritual life begins
- Our hearts are changed
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16.
4. We Receive the Holy Spirit
When we believe in Christ, God gives us the Holy Spirit to live in us.
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit" Ephesians 1:13.
The Holy Spirit:
- Guides us into all truth
- Convicts us of sin
- Empowers us to live holy lives
- Helps us to tell others about Jesus
5. We Become Children of God
This is amazing! We enter a new relationship with God as Father.
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12.
This means we are adopted into God’s family.
6. We Begin a Life of Transformation
Faith in Jesus starts a process called sanctification—a life increasingly shaped by God, becoming more like Jesus.
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17.
This means we grows in holiness, love and obedience.
7. We Receive Eternal Life
Through Jesus, God promises us eternal life with Him.
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.1 John 5:11.
This begins now and continues beyond death.
8. We Become Part of the Church
We are united with others who follow Jesus. The church is also called "the body of Christ".
Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptised into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13.
